The role of intellectual intelligence: really great or really necessary for children?

11:24 am

In the era of global integration, modern parents not only desire to raise their children to become intelligent, but also rich in emotional intelligence (EQ). Large corporations and companies in the world also gradually assess employees by EQ over IQ. What is emotional intelligence and is it important and necessary to cultivate emotional intelligence for children?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand oneself, to understand the feelings of those around and to understand how our emotions affect others. A high EQ will help children develop a strong ability to communicate, express, socialize, and adapt quickly to different situations they meet in life. This will give children a foundation for necessary skills to succeed in the future.

In contrast, children with low EQ may  have fewer friends, feel alone and struggle with integrating. In the future, low EQ children will also find it more difficult to create good relationships to develop their careers. Emotional deficiencies can also lead to worse characteristics, such as bad behaviors.

Although getting more and more attention, nowadays, emotional intelligence has not been admitted by parents of its importance. Based on the analysis of social data of the past five years from social networking sites and search pages for children, the most popular results are “how to learn English. ", how to be smarter", but it lacks a lot of keywords such as: "character", "behavior", "personal discipline". or "love".

Developing emotional intelligence for children means helping them increase their ability to understand other people's emotions, to enhance cooperation between people. According to Daniel Goleman, the American psychologist, there are five factors in identifying emotional intelligence: understanding yourself; control of self; rich in enthusiasm; control of self, rich in enthusiasm; sympathetic; good communication skills.

In addition to that, EQ also means love. EQ is above all about love and understanding of yourself and others.

Children will also learn to recognize emotions by identifying emotions in themselves and those around them such as love, hate, sadness, joy, anger, fear, surprise, desire.  At the same time a child feels and names emotions as he or she understands the causes and consequences of those emotions. Therefore, children can control their emotions and behave appropriately in real situations.

Parents can explore and discuss situations with their children and encourage them to share their true feelings. Therefore, parents can understand their children better to help them know how to regulate emotions, sympathize and share.
